Often this is early in the pregnancy. We will meet every 4 weeks until 32 weeks, then twice monthly until 36 weeks and weekly until the baby is born. I will meet you in your home for your prenatals with some of the visits occurring in my home office. At 36 weeks we will schedule a home visit where the entire birth team will get together (second midwife, doula if hired, other family members and friends, if desired). I will be on call from 36 weeks until the birth or up to 43 weeks. After that time, you would need to have a hospital birth as a homebirth is no longer legal or advised.

During the initial prenatal I gather historical information from you that may affect your pregnancy or birth. Ongoing prenatal care includes nutrition and exercise counseling, as well as regular assessment of the following: blood pressure, pulse, urine analysis, uterine growth, fetal heart rate, and fetal position.

I provide informed choice and information forms throughout your pregnancy to assist you in making informed decisions. You will receive information about ultrasound, blood sugar testing, Group B strep culturing, and others as your pregnancy advances. I also lend books from my personal library to help you be

informed. Appointments last an hour (at least) so there is plenty of time to talk

about any questions you have.

Lab analysis of your blood to keep tabs on your health will also be part of your

prenatal care. Initial blood work will look at things like your blood type, iron

levels and whether you have been exposed to infectious diseases like German

measles, hepatitis B, Syphilis, toxoplasmosis and Gonorrhea/Chlamydia, all of

which could harm your baby. Other lab work that you might need and/or choose

include testing for blood sugar, Group B Strep, and urine analysis.

Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)

It is an honor for me to serve women who have had a cesarean section with a

prior birth (or more). This can be an empowering life changing experience for

women who have often had a difficult hospital birth. There are some additional

pieces of information that are necessary for me to have and some conditions that

must be met in order for a VBAC to occur at home. We need to have the surgical

record from the cesarean(s) to confirm a lower transverse incision. You need to

live within 30 minutes of a hospital. It should be 24 months or greater since your

surgery. I ask that you have an ultrasound at around 30 weeks to confirm the

location of the placenta (away from the scar site).

Twins and Breeches

At this time I have no experience with twins and breeches. We are fortunate to

live relatively close to midwives in Portland that are very experienced. If you are

interested in a homebirth with me, we would contact one of these midwives to

partner with me to provide your care.

Birth

As part of the birth team a second midwife will also attend you. As I am in the

beginning stage of my practice, she will be a more experienced midwife who will

be available for the 36 week visit, the birth and immediate postpartum and as a

consultant for me to call on throughout your pregnancy and postpartum.

I bring the following equipment to the birth: stethoscope, blood pressure cuff,

thermometer, Doppler, instruments for cutting the cord, baby scale, herbs,

suturing supplies, oxygen and resuscitation supplies, IV and fluids, medications

and other odds and ends.

Before the 36-week visit you will need to purchase some supplies. I will provide

you with a list. The supplies cost around $40.

If transport to the hospital becomes necessary

Occasionally, an emergency arises or you decide that you want to transport to

the hospital. This is often due to a long labor and the need for pain relief. We

can transport you to the closest hospital (Tillamook General, Columbia Memorial,

or Providence Seaside) by private vehicle or by calling 911. If we transport by

private vehicle, we will have equipment available for an emergency delivery.

Either way, I will accompany you to the hospital and stay with you until your baby

is born and the two of you are together and stable.

Postpartum Care

I or the second midwife will make 5 postpartum visits to you. We see you on

the 1st day (or talk over the phone), 3rd weeks after your birth. We monitor the health of you and the baby, provide

breastfeeding counseling as needed, answer questions and provide general

support.

Waterbirth

Water is a wonderful tool for relaxing during labor and birth. If you are interested

in a waterbirth, I have an inflatable birth tub that I provide to clients. It comes

with a pump for inflating the tub as well as a pump for emptying the water after

use. You will need to purchase a liner, a hose, adapter to attach the hose to your

sink, and have a hot water heater that is capable of heating 175-200 gallons of

water (most of the time you just need to turn it up).

day, at one week, two weeks, and six

What to expect from the midwifery service of Jennifer Childress Prenatal Care I provide prenatal care starting when you decide to hire me.
